#1. Verity by Colleen Hoover
Best for: Psychological thrillers where you don’t know who to believe
Verity has been around for years, but it is sitting at the top of Amazon’s Suspense Thriller bestseller list again—and there’s a very obvious reason readers are rediscovering it.
The film adaptation arrived in 2026, putting Colleen Hoover’s disturbing psychological thriller back in front of a huge audience. Recent bestseller data also shows the book continuing to perform strongly beyond Amazon.
The story follows Lowen Ashleigh, a struggling writer hired by Jeremy Crawford to finish the bestselling series written by his injured wife, Verity.
While going through Verity’s office, Lowen discovers an unfinished autobiography.
What she reads inside changes everything.
The manuscript contains horrifying claims about Verity’s marriage, children, and the tragedy that destroyed the Crawford family.
But the deeper Lowen gets into Verity’s life, the harder it becomes to determine exactly what is true.
Colleen Hoover describes the novel as a standalone romantic thriller centered around Lowen’s discovery of Verity’s disturbing unpublished manuscript.
Why readers may love it
- Psychological suspense
- Unreliable characters
- Dark family secrets
- Isolated house
- Romantic tension
- Shocking revelations
- An ending people still argue about
This is definitely one of those books where finishing it is only the beginning.
Then you have to decide:
Which version of the truth do you believe?
#2. The Witch by Freida McFadden
Best for: Freida McFadden fans who want something creepy
Freida McFadden released The Witch on October 6, 2026—and one day later it was already sitting at #2 on the Amazon Suspense Thrillers list you checked.
That is a pretty impressive debut.
Julia Barlow has lost her job and her apartment, leaving her with one place to go:
Pemberton, her family’s seventeenth-century estate in rural Massachusetts.
She tells herself she’s there to check on her grandmother.
Then the house starts behaving strangely.
Every night, the grandfather clock stops at 3:41 a.m.
Lights flicker.
A mysterious voice calls for help outside Julia’s bedroom.
And the deeper she digs into the estate’s history, the more she learns about a woman executed for witchcraft in 1692.
Freida McFadden’s official site describes The Witch as a psychological and domestic thriller about inherited secrets, family lies, and a house that may be haunted by women whose stories were buried. It was published October 6, 2026.
Why readers may love it
- Haunted old estate
- Family secrets
- Witchcraft history
- Psychological suspense
- Creepy nighttime events
- Freida McFadden twists
- Domestic thriller elements
This one feels particularly well timed for October.
A Freida McFadden thriller with a seventeenth-century estate, possible ghosts, and witchcraft history?
That’s basically spooky-season bait for thriller readers.

#3. The French Illusion by John Grisham
Best for: Fast-paced international suspense
John Grisham’s newest thriller takes the suspense far outside the courtroom.
Paul and Chelsea Tanner have just gotten married and head to Paris for what should be a dream honeymoon.
Then they are kidnapped during a day trip into the French countryside.
And apparently, they aren’t the first victims.
The investigation eventually pulls in the FBI, CIA, and French Intelligence, as authorities try to determine why the newlyweds were targeted and how their disappearance connects to other crimes.
Meanwhile, a young lawyer is recruited as bait in a CIA operation designed to uncover the truth.
Penguin Random House describes The French Illusion as a suspense thriller about a Paris honeymoon gone disastrously wrong. It was published September 29, 2026, and runs 352 pages.
Why readers may love it
- Kidnapping
- Paris and French countryside setting
- International conspiracy
- CIA and FBI investigation
- Espionage
- Fast pacing
- Classic Grisham suspense
If you think of John Grisham primarily as the legal-thriller guy, this one looks like a fun change of scenery.
You still get the lawyers and government agencies.
You just also get kidnappings, intelligence operations, and an international mystery.

#4. Other Worlds Than These by Stephen King and Peter Straub
Best for: Suspense readers who also love horror and dark fantasy
This is easily the most unusual book in Amazon’s current Suspense Thrillers top four.
Other Worlds Than These is the long-awaited final installment in the Talisman Trilogy, following:
- The Talisman
- Black House
- Other Worlds Than These
Jack Sawyer is older now.
But once again, events pull him toward the Territories and the larger supernatural world connected to Stephen King’s mythology.
This time he must confront infected teenagers and the mysterious forces of the Gullet before the threat spreads beyond one world.
Stephen King’s official site identifies the October 6, 2026 release as the conclusion to the Talisman Trilogy and connects its story directly to the larger Dark Tower universe.
At 624 pages, this is also by far the biggest commitment on this list.
Why readers may love it
- Stephen King
- Supernatural suspense
- Parallel worlds
- Horror
- Dark fantasy
- The Talisman characters
- Dark Tower connections
- Huge epic storyline
Amazon may currently have it sitting in Suspense Thrillers, but this book crosses several genres.
If you like your thrillers with monsters, alternate worlds, horror, and a whole lot of Stephen King mythology, this is the obvious pick.

Which Bestseller Should You Read?
If you’re staring at the top four and can’t decide:
| If you want… | Pick… |
|---|---|
| Psychological twists | Verity |
| Creepy haunted-house suspense | The Witch |
| International action | The French Illusion |
| Supernatural epic suspense | Other Worlds Than These |
Personally, I think this is an unusually varied top four.
Someone looking for a classic psychological page-turner and someone looking for an 600+ page supernatural Stephen King epic can both technically shop the same Amazon category right now.
Why Is Verity #1 Again?
Timing probably has a lot to do with it.
The Verity movie adaptation was released in 2026, starring Dakota Johnson, Anne Hathaway, and Josh Hartnett, bringing the story to an entirely new audience. Recent reporting around the film has focused heavily on the same ambiguous ending that made the novel such a conversation starter in the first place.
It is also appearing on current national bestseller lists, so its Amazon resurgence isn’t happening in isolation.
If you’ve somehow avoided Verity all this time, this may be the moment it finally catches you.
Three of the Top Four Are Brand-New Releases
This is what I find most interesting about the current list.
The Witch — released October 6, 2026.
The French Illusion — released September 29, 2026.
Other Worlds Than These — released October 6, 2026.
Then Verity, originally published years ago, is beating all three.
That gives this particular bestseller list a fun mix of:
one huge returning hit + three major new releases.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for your next suspense thriller, Amazon readers are currently buying four very different books.
For pure psychological suspense, Verity remains hard to ignore.
For a brand-new creepy October read, The Witch feels almost perfectly timed.
If international espionage and kidnapping sound more appealing, go with The French Illusion.
And if you want your suspense mixed with horror and massive supernatural stakes, Other Worlds Than These is the outlier worth considering.
I’ll be interested to see how long this particular ranking holds.
Amazon bestseller lists move quickly—which means there will probably be a completely different group of books waiting for us soon.
