Caught Up by Navessa Allen was the perfect book to read immediately after Lights Out. It has the same dark, addictive energy that made the first book so easy to binge, but this story felt a little more emotional and character-driven.

This time, the focus is on Lauren and Junior, two people with a complicated history who are pulled back into each other’s lives years after their relationship fell apart. Their story mixes second-chance romance, obsession, mafia danger, dark humor, and plenty of spice.

I gave Caught Up 4 out of 5 stars.

If you enjoyed Lights Out and want another dark romance with morally gray characters, strong chemistry, and plenty of tension, Caught Up is a very easy book to get lost in.

Caught Up Summary

Caught Up follows Lauren Marchetti and Nico “Junior” Trocci, former high school sweethearts whose relationship ended badly.

Years later, their lives look very different.

Lauren has built an independent life for herself and has become confident in who she is, while Junior is deeply involved in his family’s criminal world and desperately wants a way out.

But Junior has never really let Lauren go.

When the two are brought back into each other’s orbit, all of the feelings, resentment, attraction, and unresolved history between them come rushing back.

Their reunion quickly becomes complicated as Junior tries to protect Lauren while also dealing with his family, his past, and the dangerous life he’s been trying to escape.

At its heart, Caught Up is a second-chance romance about two people trying to figure out whether they can move beyond what happened between them and build something completely different.

My Review of Caught Up by Navessa Allen

What stood out most to me in Caught Up was the character development.

Lauren and Junior felt more emotionally layered than I expected, and their history gave their relationship a little more weight than a typical instant-attraction romance.

There is already so much between them before the story really begins.

Regret.

Anger.

Attraction.

History.

And a lot of unfinished business.

That made their relationship interesting because you’re not just watching two people fall for each other. You’re watching two people decide whether they can trust each other again.

I also appreciated that Caught Up didn’t simply repeat everything that worked in Lights Out.

The books definitely belong in the same world, but this story has its own personality. The humor is still there, but the emotional side felt a little stronger, and Junior’s connection to the mafia gives the story a different kind of danger.

What I Liked About Caught Up

The second-chance romance worked really well for me.

Lauren and Junior already have a history together, so the chemistry doesn’t feel like it comes out of nowhere. Their past gives every interaction an extra layer because both characters are carrying feelings they haven’t completely dealt with.

I also really liked Lauren as a character.

She’s confident, independent, and comfortable with who she is, but she still has emotional walls when it comes to Junior. That balance made her feel more interesting than a heroine who is simply waiting for the romance to happen.

Junior is exactly the kind of morally gray character you’d expect in this series.

He’s obsessive, protective, dangerous, and involved in a world most people would want absolutely nothing to do with.

But there’s also a vulnerability underneath all of that, especially when it comes to Lauren.

And, just like Lights Out, the book has enough humor mixed into the darkness to keep it entertaining rather than overwhelmingly heavy.

Is Caught Up a Dark Romance?

Yes.

Caught Up is a dark romance with mafia elements, obsession, morally gray characters, violence, explicit sexual content, and some heavier themes.

It also has a strong second-chance-romance storyline.

Like Lights Out, though, this isn’t a completely serious or relentlessly dark book. Navessa Allen mixes humor and banter into the story, which helps balance some of the darker subject matter.

That combination is one of the things I enjoy most about the Into Darkness series.

How Spicy Is Caught Up?

Very spicy.

If you thought Lights Out had a lot of explicit romance, Caught Up definitely continues in that direction.

The sexual content is a major part of Lauren and Junior’s relationship, so readers who prefer closed-door or low-spice romance should probably skip this one.

For readers who enjoy very spicy dark romance, though, it fits naturally with the style of the story.

Caught Up vs. Lights Out

I gave both books 4 out of 5 stars, but they feel different.

Lights Out felt a little more playful and immediately bingeable to me, while Caught Up had more emotional history behind the central relationship.

The second-chance element gives Lauren and Junior’s story more baggage from the beginning, and the mafia storyline adds another layer of danger.

I also liked seeing familiar characters and staying inside the same world rather than immediately moving on to something completely different.

That’s one of the reasons I enjoyed reading these books back-to-back.

Do You Need to Read Lights Out Before Caught Up?

I would recommend reading Lights Out first. Read my review of Lights Out here.

Caught Up focuses on a different central couple, so the romance itself has its own storyline, but both books take place in the same world and characters from Lights Out appear again.

Reading the series in order makes those connections much more enjoyable.

The reading order begins:

  1. Lights Out
  2. Caught Up

Who Should Read Caught Up?

I’d recommend Caught Up if you enjoy:

  • Dark romance
  • Second-chance romance
  • Mafia romance
  • Morally gray heroes
  • Obsessive or protective male characters
  • Very spicy romance
  • Strong female characters
  • Dark humor
  • Emotional relationship history
  • Fast-paced, bingeable books

If you enjoyed Lights Out, I think Caught Up is absolutely worth continuing with.

Is Caught Up Worth Reading?

For fans of dark romance, yes.

I liked that the book felt familiar enough to work as a continuation of Lights Out without simply repeating the exact same story.

Lauren and Junior’s history gives the romance more emotional depth, while the mafia storyline and darker themes keep the plot moving.

It’s dramatic, spicy, sometimes messy, and very easy to keep reading.

Final Thoughts on Caught Up

Reading Caught Up right after Lights Out felt like the perfect continuation.

There was an ease to returning to this world, like slipping back into a story I wasn’t quite ready to leave, while Lauren and Junior gave me a completely different relationship to become invested in.

I especially enjoyed the deeper character development, the second-chance romance, and the way Navessa Allen balanced darker themes with humor and chemistry.

It was another fun, fast page-turner and a great reminder of why reading a series back-to-back can be so satisfying.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5

If you enjoyed Lights Out and want more dark romance, morally gray characters, high spice, and complicated relationships, Caught Up is definitely worth adding to your reading list.
