Lights Out by Navessa Allen was a fitting way to begin my 2026 reading year—fast-paced, addictive, dark, funny, and very easy to get completely wrapped up in.

This definitely isn’t a traditional cozy romance. Lights Out is a dark romantic comedy with stalking, morally gray characters, explicit romance, and some genuinely disturbing themes. But underneath all of that darkness is a surprisingly entertaining relationship that kept me turning pages.

I gave Lights Out 4 out of 5 stars.

If you’re wondering whether Lights Out is worth reading, here’s my spoiler-free summary, full review, and who I think will enjoy it most.

Lights Out Summary

Lights Out follows Aly Cappellucci, a trauma nurse who has developed a fascination with the masked men she sees online.

One masked creator in particular has caught her attention: Josh Hammond.

Josh has built a massive online following without showing his face, posting masked videos that play directly into Aly’s darkest fantasies. What begins online eventually becomes very real when Josh learns that Aly might be interested in turning some of those fantasies into reality.

And Josh decides to take her up on it.

Their relationship quickly becomes an unconventional mix of attraction, obsession, stalking, humor, and increasingly high stakes. But Josh isn’t the only person watching Aly, and what initially feels like a dangerous game between two consenting adults becomes something much more serious.

From there, Lights Out blends dark romance with suspense, humor, morally gray decisions, and a relationship that definitely doesn’t follow the usual romance rules.

My Review of Lights Out by Navessa Allen

What surprised me most about Lights Out was how easy it was to read.

Going into a dark stalker romance, I expected something that might feel much heavier. Instead, Navessa Allen balances the darker subject matter with humor and banter that make the story surprisingly fun.

That combination worked for me.

There’s still an underlying sense of unease throughout the story, but it doesn’t become overwhelmingly dark. The relationship between Aly and Josh has an almost playful quality at times, even when what’s happening around them is anything but normal.

The pacing was another big strength.

This was one of those books where I kept telling myself I’d read just a little longer before bed. The chapters move quickly, something is almost always happening, and I was genuinely curious about where the story was headed.

It felt bingeable without feeling rushed.

What I Liked About Lights Out

The atmosphere was one of my favorite parts.

There’s a constant push and pull between danger and humor that gives Lights Out a very distinct personality. One moment can feel genuinely unsettling, while the next is funny enough to lighten everything back up.

I also really enjoyed Aly and Josh together.

Neither character fits neatly into the traditional romance mold, which is part of what makes their relationship entertaining. They’re both comfortable with things that would send most people running in the opposite direction, and that creates a dynamic that feels intentionally over-the-top while still being easy to become invested in.

And then there’s Josh.

He’s morally gray, secretive, technically a stalker—and somehow also frequently funny and surprisingly likable. That contradiction is a big part of what makes the book work.

Is Lights Out a Dark Romance?

Yes. Very much so.

Lights Out is a dark romance with stalker-romance elements, morally gray characters, explicit sexual content, violence, and several potentially disturbing themes.

But I’d also describe it as a dark romantic comedy.

That’s an important distinction because the book isn’t relentlessly grim. There is a lot of humor and banter mixed into the darker material, which makes it feel more approachable than I expected.

If you’ve never read dark romance before, this could be an interesting introduction to the genre—but you should absolutely check the book’s content warnings first.

How Spicy Is Lights Out?

Lights Out is very spicy.

This isn’t a romance where the intimate scenes fade to black. Sexual content is a significant part of the story and some of the scenes involve darker fantasies and themes.

That’s worth knowing before you pick it up.

Personally, I rated the book 4/5 stars, but I’d specifically recommend it to readers who are comfortable with graphic romance scenes and darker subject matter.

If explicit romance isn’t your thing, this probably isn’t the book for you.

Is Lights Out Scary?

I wouldn’t call Lights Out a horror novel, but it definitely has suspenseful and unsettling moments.

There are elements of stalking, obsession, violence, home invasion, and danger that give parts of the book a thriller-like feel.

For me, though, the humor and romance kept it from ever feeling like a truly frightening read.

It was more dark and tense than scary.

Who Should Read Lights Out?

I’d recommend Lights Out if you enjoy:

  • Dark romance
  • Stalker romance
  • Morally gray male characters
  • Masked-man romance
  • Fast-paced books
  • Spicy romance
  • Dark humor
  • Suspense mixed with romance
  • Strong banter between the main characters
  • Books that are easy to binge

I’d be more cautious recommending it if you prefer closed-door romance, don’t enjoy morally questionable characters, or are uncomfortable with stalking and darker sexual themes.

Is Lights Out Worth Reading?

For the right reader, absolutely.

Lights Out isn’t going to appeal to everyone—and it’s definitely not trying to.

But if you enjoy dark romance and don’t mind a story that gets strange, spicy, morally questionable, and occasionally ridiculous, it’s a very entertaining read.

I appreciated that it didn’t take itself too seriously. The darker parts give the story tension, while the humor and chemistry between Aly and Josh keep it fun.

It’s the kind of book that makes you curious enough to keep saying, “Okay, one more chapter.”

And then suddenly it’s very late.

What Comes After Lights Out?

Lights Out is the first book in Navessa Allen’s Into Darkness series.

The next book is Caught Up, which I read immediately after finishing Lights Out and also gave 4 out of 5 stars.

While the books are part of the same series, I think Caught Up deserves its own full review rather than trying to squeeze two book reviews onto one page.

Final Thoughts on Lights Out

Starting my reading year with Lights Out ended up being a lot of fun.

It was fast, strange, dark, funny, spicy, and completely bingeable.

What stood out most was the balance between the book’s darker themes and its sense of humor. There’s plenty of tension and morally questionable behavior, but there are also enough lighter moments that it never felt exhausting to read.

If you love fast page-turners, dark romance, strong chemistry, and stories that aren’t afraid to get a little unhinged, Lights Out is worth adding to your reading list.

My rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4/5
